Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, operating through its various subsidiaries, is a diversified financial services company primarily engaged in property and casualty insurance, reinsurance, and investment management. Its operations span the United States, Canada, Asia, and other international markets. The enterprise organizes its activities into three main segments: Insurance and Reinsurance, Run-off, and Non-Insurance Companies. Fairfax underwrites a broad spectrum of property and casualty policies, including coverage for perils such as fire, explosions, earthquakes, windstorms, floods, boiler malfunctions, machinery failures, and construction flaws. Additionally, the company provides insurance for automobiles, commercial and personal real estate, and agricultural crops. Its offerings extend to workers' compensation, employer's liability, accident and health, medical malpractice, professional indemnity, and excess liability (umbrella) policies. Furthermore, it covers marine, aerospace, surety, and various other specialized risks and liabilities, alongside its reinsurance products. Beyond its core insurance operations, Fairfax is involved in several non-insurance ventures. These encompass retailing a diverse range of products, such as home improvement supplies, children's toys and baby items, golf gear, athletic clothing and accessories, household goods, decorative items, tableware, and gifts. The company also makes strategic investments in the retail sector and manages holiday resort properties. Its non-insurance portfolio further includes integrated travel and related financial services, the sourcing and distribution of pulses and essential food items, and the creation and dissemination of entertainment media. Moreover, Fairfax offers pet health insurance and associated database services, as well as comprehensive media and marketing strategies. Established in 1951, the company initially operated as Markel Financial Holdings Limited before adopting its current name, Fairfax Financial Holdings Limited, in 1987. Its corporate headquarters are situated in Toronto, Canada.
