What Makes a Dividend Aristocrat?

To qualify as an S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrat, a company must meet three criteria: it must be a member of the S&P 500 index, it must have increased its dividend for at least 25 consecutive calendar years, and it must meet certain minimum market cap and liquidity requirements. As of early 2026, approximately 66 companies hold this status — roughly 13% of the S&P 500.

Dividend Aristocrats are tracked by the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index, which is rebalanced annually in January. Companies that cut or freeze their dividend are immediately removed. The index has historically delivered higher total returns than the broader S&P 500 with lower volatility — a rare combination. This list includes both confirmed Aristocrats and near-Aristocrats (20+ year streaks) that are likely to qualify soon. Use the DRIP calculator to model income from any stock below.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Dividend Aristocrat?
A Dividend Aristocrat is an S&P 500 company that has raised its dividend every year for at least 25 consecutive years. As of 2026 there are approximately 66 Aristocrats — about 13% of the S&P 500. The designation signals exceptional business quality: only companies with durable competitive advantages can sustain dividend growth through multiple recessions.
What is the difference between Dividend Aristocrats and Dividend Kings?
Dividend Kings require 50+ consecutive years of increases — twice the Aristocrat threshold. Kings include Coca-Cola (62 years), Procter & Gamble (68 years), Genuine Parts (68 years), and Dover Corp (69 years). All Dividend Kings are automatically Aristocrats, but Aristocrats are not all Kings.
Are Dividend Aristocrats a good investment in 2026?
Historically, the S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats Index has delivered higher total returns than the broader S&P 500 with meaningfully lower volatility. The 2026 average yield of ~2.8% is modest compared to high-yield alternatives, but the combination of growing income and capital appreciation has compounded exceptionally over 10-20 year periods. They are best suited as core long-term holdings rather than short-term income plays.
How do I invest in Dividend Aristocrats?
You can invest in individual Aristocrats through any brokerage, or get diversified exposure through ETFs like NOBL (ProShares S&P 500 Dividend Aristocrats ETF) which holds all qualifying Aristocrats at equal weight. Most brokers offer free DRIP — enabling automatic dividend reinvestment that accelerates compounding. Use our calculator to model the income potential of any specific Aristocrat.
